What Is Naturopathic Medicine?
The field of Naturopathic medicine or Naturopathy is over 100 years old in North America, and is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. In regard to training, Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) receive at least 3-years pre-medical training at university, then 4-years at an accredited Naturopathic college. They are primary care physicians using a variety of therapies and modalities according to each patient’s need. In BC, many other provinces, and the United States, Naturopathic medicine is regulated just as MDs, Nurses, Acupuncturists, Physiotherapists, and other health professionals are licenced and regulated.
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) are generalists in alternative medicine in the same fashion that most MDs are family physicians. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease. Naturopathic protocols are based on research and study, and naturopathic medicine is a science-based natural medicine.
The doctor of naturopathy is trained in, and emphasizes seven natural healing acts to find and treat the causes of disease and discomfort. They are:
- Botanical medicine
- Clinical nutrition
- Naturopathic manipulation
- Acupuncture and oriental medicine
- Disease prevention and lifestyle counselling
Naturopathic protocols are developed using not only a physical exam and laboratory tests, but also lifestyle details such as dietary habits, emotional stress, exercise and exposure to environmental hazards. Some of the approaches to diagnosis and treatment include Nutrigenomix testing and IV therapy. A comprehensive intake is done focusing on your health history as well as your current medical issues. Your Naturopathic Physician will then create an individualized protocol specific to you and your health history!
